5 Best Snowmobile Trails Off the Beaten Path

We’re in the peak of snowmobile season, so it’s time to take a trip and kick up some snow! As you’re planning your snowmobiling adventure, the nation’s most popular spots will dominate search results and best-of lists. It can be hard to find those destinations with less crowded but still shreddable trails.

If you’re looking for a snowmobiling area that’s a little more under the radar, a little more underground, then we’ve put together a few recommendations. Here are some ideas for the best snowmobile spots off the beaten path.

Cadillac, MI

When you ask about the best snowmobiling trails in the midwest, nearly everyone will tell you to go to Michigan’s upper peninsula. But there’s plenty of fun to be had in the lower peninsula, away from all that hype.

You’ve probably heard that Tug Hill or Old Forge are the hot areas to visit here. But if you go a little further east you’ll hit Moose River Plains- a more remote backcountry spot that’s also the largest piece of Adirondack public land. It’s a 16 mile stretch of open snow for you to go wild.

Boulder Junction, WI

When other snowmobilers take the exit to St. Germain, don’t stop. Head to Boulder Junction, WI for 130 miles of trails (we hear Trail #8 is a must-see), and a lively town full of shops and spots to grab a beer after a long day.

When temps are above freezing, Bear Lake is a hugely popular summer destination. It’s renowned for its amazing turquoise water – some even call it the Caribbean of Rockies. But in winter, the surrounding snowmobile trails are yours for the taking.
